Dr Stephen D Marks, MD MSc MRCP DCH FRCPCH, is a Reader and Consultant in Paediatric Nephrology at UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health and clinical lead for renal transplantation at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust in London, UK which is one of the largest paediatric renal transplantation centres in the world. His research continues to date in the fields of renal transplantation (including innovative drug trials concerning new anti-rejection therapies and assessment of children post-renal transplantation), systemic lupus erythematosus and vasculitis (including studies of the aetiopathogenesis, management and outcome of childhood onset SLE and lupus nephritis) and hypertension (including genetic linkage and familial studies of renovascular hypertension and clinical studies on the management and long-term prognosis of children with renovascular hypertension). He was named as one of The Times Top 100 Children’s Doctors in the United Kingdom in December 2012. He is a member of the European Society for Paediatric Nephrology, International Pediatric Hypertension Association, International Pediatric Nephrology Association and International Pediatric Transplantation Association. He is section editor for “Pediatric Nephrology”, which is the journal of the International Pediatric Nephrology Association and on the editorial boards of the “British Journal of Renal Medicine" and "Pediatric Transplantation”, which is the journal of the International Pediatric Transplant Association.

My current research interests fall into three major areas:
1. Renal transplantation: We are involved in innovative drug trials concerning new anti-rejection therapies and assessment of children post-renal transplantation, examining the fine balance between rejection and infection (and avoidance of EBV-driven post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder).
2. Systemic lupus erythematosis (SLE) and vasculitis: We are studying the aetiopathogenesis, management and outcome of childhood onset SLE, lupus nephritis and vasculitis. There are currently several projects underway with my colleagues, Professors Paul Brogan and Neil Sebire and Drs Kjell Tullus and Clarissa Pilkington looking at treatment of SLE and vasculitis with novel agents and the clinicopathological correlations of lupus nephritis.
3. Hypertension: As part of the Renovascular Hypertension team, we are examining the management and long-term prognosis of children with renovascular hypertension. We have performed studies examining the genetic linkage of childhood renovascular hypertension with Professors Robert Kleta, Detlef Bockenhauer, Adrian Woolf, Dr Kjell Tullus and Ms Eileen Brennan.
I am involved in teaching and supervision of post-graduate medicine with BSc, MSc and MD students.
