Research Summary

The main focus in Sabine’s research is to bring a diverse range of academic research and a broad scope of professional practice experience into the teaching landscape to foster an inclusive architectural practice. Within my academic career, She has pursued excellence and innovation in teaching and research with intensity and rigour. The dissemination and publicity of her work over the past 20 years has involved extensive designing, building in her professional career, and lecturing, exhibitions, publications, forums, workshops and conferences around the world in my teaching career.
Sabine’s research work currently investigates the idea of an architecture as an inclusive practice with a clear focus on the integration of community engagement as an inclusive participatory design on all levels of the project conception and delivery.
The work is cross-disciplinary in nature and has ventured, in many ways, into cultural practice and human wellbeing within the public realm. Furthermore, it has established, as well as it has fostered, collaborations with public authorities and other networks of like-minded practitioners, researchers and industry.
Engaging disadvantaged communities within a real and a speculative architectural context has questioned ideas of design authorship, challenged the roles within participatory practices, and the fundamental basis of what constitutes a good inclusive design.
The most significant projects have been the Harlesden Town Garden Hub and the research on the Casa Sperimentale enabling both groups with funding and support them to be able to succeed in the future.
Having established record of supervision of public engagement tactics, within other schools nationally and internationally and have been approached by PhD candidates to supervise their research as an external supervisor.
Throughout her entire career her practice-led research work and public engagement initiative have been  shown in exhibitions, in galleries, increasing the engagement between the public and the discipline of architecture nationally and internationally.
Sabine’s social media channels and  films on YouTube, have a community reach far beyond the national architectural audience.
The recognition though the Provost’s Public Engagement Prize for Collaborations between teaching and research in 2020 and its importance to engage with local deprived communities is the proudest achievement.

Teaching Summary

Teaching summary
Sabine been teaching architectural design studio since September 2000. Sabine has led very successful undergraduate and postgraduate design units since in 2005 with several RIBA president medals nominees and winners. The work of her students has repeatedly won top Bartlett School of Architecture and Faculty prizes, international competitions and other awards.
The development of an innovative curriculum around inclusion and participatory design, with strong links to communities in London and internationally certainly was initiated at London Metropolitan University. By engaging the wider public with architecture, Sabine aims to enable her students to gain valuable ‘real-life’ experiences through a series of open community consultations, presentations, exhibitions, and other initiatives of similar importance. In the context of a national (and international) housing crisis, the importance of diversity, wellbeing, health and sustainability, the development of novel housing initiatives like co-housing dwellings, the generation of new housing models, the importance of food production in the urban context, and the provision of local clean energy production are all crucial topics that need to be investigated and challenged by the students.
In the last academic years Sabine established a strong collaboration with the University of Seoul and Hanyang University Seoul, South Korea. Working on a shared Unit brief, addressing the theme of collective and shared city, within a similar context/site in London and Seoul. In 2020 working remotely with students on workshops and presentations. Students have been working on a digital collaborative media platform, to exchange information and working methods during the academic year. Final reviews and academic outcomes will be shared between them and uploaded onto a newly designed interface. These international opportunities are very important for a global student community, while the pandemic presents an opportunity to connect even further. The connected curriculum opportunity, together with a wide range of online learning possibilities, established through the Bartlett Living Lab, gives students a truly global exposure, working within partnerships informed by research from different mediums.
Establishing the link with the China Academy of Art (CAA) Hangzhou and working with them over 4 years has strengthened the global engagement and has certainly impacted within our global student community. As a direct result it has impacted and diversified the teaching approach Sabine has taken ever since.
One of her further interests is the short course programme, which has been constantly growing since 2012. Initially established as a possibility for Widening Participation applicants into Architecture, the programme has massively expanded and with it the variety of innovative teaching methods.
Last year we hosted over 500 students in the month of July. In my role as Director of Short Courses I had to manage over 40 design tutors and introduce over 40 new teaching student assistants.
Being able to stimulate and advise on international workshop learning activities and teaching material in Asia, South America and Middle East and the Baltics has given me the opportunity to be invited to overview student workshops.
