Biography
I completed a PhD in Sociology of (Science) Education at King's College London in 2017. My doctoral research explored how gender, social class and ethnicity shape girls' engagement with science in formal and informal contexts. I joined the UCL Institute of Education as a Research Fellow in March 2017.
Previously, I had completed a Master of Pharmacy degree at the University of Ljubljana and an MSc in Ethnicity and Multiculturalism (Sociology) at the University of Bristol.
For the past decade, I have worked in the areas of education/social research and healthcare in public and private sector.
Research Summary
My research interests include:
- sociology of education
- science education in formal and informal settings
- social equity
- gender
- social class
- ethnicity and migration
- evaluation
- mixed methods & programming
I currently work on the Youth Equity and STEM project (2017-2021), which focused on equitable practices in informal STEM learning settings, such as community centre, science centre, tech clubs and zoos. This Wellcome Trust funded project is a collaboration with the Michigan State University and the Oregon State University/Institute for Learning Innovation. The UK side of the project is led by Professor Louise Archer. This is a mixed methods study (ethnography, surveys, creative methods) with a strong design focus (using a Design-Based Implementation Research to test and refine equitable practices across different informal science learning settings).
I am also part of the Science Capital Research team, where following the five-year Enterprising Science project (2012-2017) I continue to be involved in disseminating findings, delivering professional development sessions for educator and policy professionals, and writing academic and practitioner publications.
I,n freelance capacity, I do evaluation and consultancy work for museums, galleries and other education providers (recent work includes Imperial College London's Engineering Outreach programme, Kew Gardens and the Wellcome Collection).
Teaching Summary
I teach on several BA and MA modules (session with a strong social equity focus), supervise MA and PhD students and examine MA and PhD thesis.
