My research interests are grounded in my initial professional experiences as a primary and early literacy intervention teacher. My lines of inquiry revolve around three interdependent areas: early literacy development (with a particular focus on describing early writing development), early intervention for literacy difficulties, and translation of research to practice. I have conducted systematic reviews on several topics: The use of phonics with adults (Education Training Foundation), strategies to support language and communication (Newham Nursery Schools/ Education Endowment Foundation), Translational Research in Education (Froebel Trust) and Learning Loss/ Disruption (ESRC).
In terms of teaching, I enjoy supporting students to use and critically interrogate research methods. I was module leader for Research Methods in Literacy (MA LLLD and MA RRLL). I am now module co-leader for Researching Early Years and Primary Education (REYPE) and the Dissertation in Early Years and Primary Education modules. I have a particular interest in supporting students to conduct dissertation research using quantitative methods and/or systematic review. I also teach on literacy focused modules including: Literacy Development and on the MA in Reading Recovery and Literacy Leadership
