Editor (and founder), The British Art Journal, 1999–. Before that Editor, Apollo magazine, and previously tenured academic, University of Nottingham, and Director, Institute of European Studies, London. Studied at the Courtauld Institute of Art; Chairman, the Courtauld Association, 1998-2011. Books include The Royal Academy of Arts : History and Collections (2018); Richard Wilson and the Transformation of European Landscape Painting (with Martin Postle, 2014); Hogarth, France and British Art: The rise of the arts in eighteenth-century Britain (2007); The Portrait in Britain and America (1987); The Art of Cricket (with Alastair Smart, 1983). Written and lectured extensively on British art and on Italian painting of the 13th and 14th centuries. Paul Mellon Lecturer in British Art, Yale University and National Gallery, London, 2013. Professorial Research Fellow in the History of Art, Humanities Research Institute, University of Buckingham, 2018–.
Currently preparing for publication the Paul Mellon Lectures in British Art delivered at Yale University and the National Gallery, London, 2013, on the theme 'Painters and Players: Hogarth to Olivier'.
