Research Summary

I am based at the UCL Knowledge Lab. I have a background in Psychology, with extensive experience in Human Computer Interaction (HCI), particularly in ubiquitous computing contexts. My work is internationally known and respected in the area of new digital interfaces for teaching and learning (e.g. tangible and mobile technologies, virtual reality, touch screen interaction, whole body interaction interfaces), with a research focus on: theoretical understanding of embodied forms of interaction and cognition; forging links between research and practice through designing technology for practice; and methodological innovation. My work responds to key challenges for education raised by technological developments resulting in novel, exciting and forward-looking devices and interfaces that create new ways of interacting with and communicating through digital data. I have achieved significant impact in: 1) undertaking research providing insight into the value of such technologies for teaching and learning; 2) bridging the gap between research and practice to support effective use of technology in educational contexts; 3) informing technology innovation and design.

My work is fundamentally interdisciplinary and involves cross discipline collaboration. My grant track record demonstrates successful collaborations with other disciplines (e.g. Computer Science, Geographical Information Science, Science Education, Early Years Education, Arts and Design, Multimodality). I have been PI on seven and CoI on nine multidisciplinary research projects. These projects have led to publications in peer-reviewed journals and conferences, book chapters, edited books and a co-authored book.
