Stephen Marshall is Professor in Urban Morphology and Urban Design at the Bartlett School of Planning, University
College London. Dr Marshall has over twenty five years’ experience in the built
environment fields, initially in consultancy and subsequently in academia. His
principal research interests are in urban morphology and street layout, and
their relationships with urban formative processes, including urban design,
coding and planning. He has written or edited several books, including Streets and Patterns (2005), Land Use and Transport (with David
Banister), Cities, Design and Evolution
(2009) and Urban Coding and Planning
(2011). He was Chair of the Editorial Board of Urban Design and Planning (Proceedings
of the Institution of Civil Engineers journal series) from its launch to
2012; and is now co-editor of Built
Environment journal (https://www.alexandrinepress.co.uk/built-environment).

My research interests address interactions between the following areas:
- Urban design theory, including relationships with science and art;
- Urban form and morphology;
- Street layout and network structure;
- Urban design and planning codes;
- Urban evolution; nature-inspired urbanism.
My most recent ongoing research relates to:
- Linking urban design interventions to online participative design (Incubators of Public Spaces project; https://www.ucl.ac.uk/bartlett/planning/incubators-public-spaces);
- Biological analogies used in urbanism (Self-Organising Built Environment project; https://www.ucl.ac.uk/bartlett/planning/research-projects/2018/nov/self-organising-built-environment);
- Complexity science interpretations of urban morphology;
- Street network studies (https://rdcu.be/bbNso).
