Biography
Sean graduated with a BSc Honours degree in Biochemistry from Cardiff University in 1988 and completed his PhD in 1992.He had a number of postdoctoral positions involving research on both human cells and bacteria before being appointed to a lectureship in 1996. He was promoted to Senior Lecturer at UCL in 1999 and then to Reader in 2006. Sean is currently the Head of Microbial Diseases and editor for BMC Microbiology and the Journal of Medical Microbiology.

Research Interests
Sean Nair's research is focused in two main areas:
(i) The interactions of bacteria with host cells in health and disease where his primary focus is on the mechanisms by which staphylococci/MRSA, and other hospital-acquired pathogens such as enterococci (VRE) cause disease.
(ii) The development of novel antimicrobial strategies to combat infections. These strategies currently include the use of antisense and aptamer technologies, development of new light-activated antimicrobial agents and the identification of bacterial genes coding for potential novel therapeutic targets.
Research Opportunities
In Sean's lab there are currently projects available to investigate aspects of bacterial virulence, antimicrobial resistance and the development of novel antimicrobial agents. Potential MSc and PhD students and individuals suitable for personal fellowships should contact Sean directly.
