Research Summary

I am interested in how supernatural beliefs evolve in relation cooperation and competition, and how this varies in relation to socio-ecological conditions. My work has primarily focused on belief in witchcraft, examining questions such as why accusations within societies are often biased towards a particular sex, or how socio-ecology may determine witchcraft ‘phenotypes’. This has involved using methods including quantitative analysis of codes from ethnographic texts to test predictions. I am also interested in the evolution of other beliefs and conducted fieldwork (economic games) in Northern Ireland to examine the relationship between belief in supernatural punishment and charitable donations.
