Sarah Rand graduated from the RCSI University of Medicine and Health Sciences, Dublin, Ireland in 2003 with a BSc (Hons) in Physiotherapy. Prior to this she had completed a BA (Hons) in Natural Sciences (Physiology) from Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland. She completed an MSc at University College London in Advanced Cardiorespiratory Physiotherapy in 2010. She became a fellow of the Higher Education Academy in 2014 and was appointed as a Honorary Senior Lecturer at her alma mater RCSI University of Medicine and Health Sciences, Dublin, Ireland in 2017. Sarah is also an ex Ireland international field hockey player.
Sarah currently works at the University College London Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health as a Lecturer and Research Physiotherapist on the Advanced Physiotherapy postgraduate programmes having been appointed as a Teaching Fellow in 2010. Prior to commencing at UCL in a full time academic and research position in 2014 she worked as a clinical physiotherapist at Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital (GOSH) as a specialist cystic fibrosis (CF) physiotherapist and academic/research physiotherapist at the UCL GOS ICH. Other previous clinical roles have included working as a specialist paediatric respiratory physiotherapist at the Children’s University Hospital in Dublin and at the Royal Brompton Hospital in London.
Sarah is also an External Advisory Board member for the School of Physiotherapy, RCSI University of Medicine and Health Sciences and is a Scientific Advisory Board member for the Active Pregnancy Foundation charity.
Sarah was awarded an Inspiring Excellence Award from RCSI University of Medicine and Health Sciences in 2018.


Sarah's research is primarily focussed on the use of physical activity and exercise as an intervention for both individuals with chronic disease but also in special populations such as pregnancy. Most recently Sarah's research work has been investigating the use of digital health technology to support children with cystic fibrosis with their treatment regimes and also to investigate the ability of digital health to improve personalisation of care.
Sarah has been a co-applicant on a number of very successful grant awards (totalling £1,580,000 to date).
Sarah's research work has been recognised nationally and internationally and she received the European Cystic Fibrosis Society Young Investigator award in 2012. In addition she has been invited to present her work both nationally and internationally and in 2015 she was invited to present her work at the World Confederation for Physical Therapy conference as a state of the art platform presentation. In 2016 she was also awarded best poster at the European Cystic Fibrosis Society conference in 2016.
Sarah is also an Honorary Senior Lecturer at RCSI University of Medicine and Health Sciences in Dublin, Ireland. In addition Sarah is an External Examiner for the MSc pre-registration Physiotherapy programme at Brunel University.
