My research primarily focuses on the relationships between
environments, commerce and science, with a particular focus on weather
and climate. This research draws upon debates in geography and science
and technology studies about nature-culture, the commercialization of
science and nature, and the vexed question of scientific expertise. In
my research I aim to trace the emergence of new commercial ventures
in/of nature and science such as the weather derivatives market. I also
aim to explore debates about climate change in culturally and
historically nuanced ways that open up a range of perspectives on
climate change that go beyond scientific and technocratic responses.
I am currently involved in researching or writing up research on the following topics
- A historical study of weather insurance in the UK and US (with James Kneale), exploring an actuarial science of weather from the mid nineteenth to the mid twentieth century
