Biography

I am a Consultant Radiologist at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust and Honorary Associate Professor in clinical education at UCL.

I am an Educational Consultant for UCL Consulting, working predominantly with UCL Medical School Education Consultancy.

After qualifying with distinction in Dentistry from King's College London I went on to read Medicine at Bart's and the London, graduating with distinction in clinical sciences. I then obtained a Masters in clinical education from the UCL Institute of Education. During my undergraduate career I took time out to be President of King's College London Students' Union, then after President of the University of London Union. I was aslo a member of the NUS National Executive Committee.

My subspecialty clinical interest is head and neck and emergency radiology.  I trained in radiology at UCLH prior to joining the Royal Free hospital. My specialty training has included Head and Neck imaging at the Royal National Throat Nose and Ear Hospital, salivary intervention at Guy's Hospital, Neuroradiology at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery and Paediatric Imaging at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children. I have a particular clinical interest in head and neck imaging and intervention. I have experience imaging and intervention in HIV and infectious diseases, taking the MDT at both UCLH and the Royal Free hospitals.

I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, member of the British Association of Head and Neck Imaging, European Society of Head and Neck Radiology and the British Society of Interventional Radiology.

Research Themes
Research Summary

I am an active researcher and supervisor in clinical education with a principal interest in authentic assessment methods and professional identity. I am a collaborating member of the UCL Research Department for Medical Education.

I am exploring work-based assessment and the role of subjective 'expert' judgement vs objective 'competency' assessment; what is the difference between a competence, competency and being competent. How do you assess professional judgement?

I previously led a project exploring the changing notion of 'professionalism' when regulatory and disciplinary frameworks are applied to online behaviours. I am interested in how the participatory web, including social media, challenges public-private boundaries. Is online behaviour different? Are views expressed online individual or idealised? Data shows there are increasingly complex moral and ethical issues emerging due of the blurring of professional, public and private identity. I am interested in the notion of professionalism and what
it is to be a professional and - fundamentally - how this can be assessed.

I was previously an NIHR academic clinical fellow in clinical radiology at the UCL Centre for Medical Imaging. I collaborated on a large study studying the role whole-body MRI imaging in cancer and, in particular, methods of assessing response to targeted therapies, such as monoclonal treatments. This was funded by the Comprehensive Cancer Imaging Centre (CCIC) - a UCL and KCL collaboration.

At the beginning of my career I worked as a research physician in a Phase I drugs trials unit.

Teaching Summary

I am the MBBS module lead for imaging and co-lead of the Anatomy and Imaging vertical curriculum. I regularly deliver undergraduate teaching in imaging and anatomy and have previously led several student-selected components (SSCs) in imaging within the MBBS programme. I have a passion for applied clinical imaging as an adjunct to clinical medicine.

As an educational consultant I work principally with UCL Medical School Education Consultancy. I have collaborated on a high-profile international project to develop a new curriculum and assessment framework for a partner institution and have also contributed to the in-depth faculty development programme for doctors at Ningbo University, China.

I am lead examiner for the part 2 (clinical) MJDF examination at the Royal College of Surgeons of England. Prior to this I was lead for part 1 (written), overseeing a change in format and international expansion across 25 overseas centres, now assessing over 2500 candidates per year .  I am a member of the MJDF management group and regularly deliver examiner training in the UK and overseas.
