Biography

Selman Sevindik is a PhD student at UCL Energy Institute focussing on energy, building materials, technologies and a circular vision for sustainable growth in the built environment. He has a background in architecture and finished his undergraduate studies in Turkey. He later completed his Master’s degree at UCL Institute for Environmental Design and Engineering

Selman is also an active researcher in the Islands Laboratory, studying innovative solutions to climate change and accelerating the circular economy. He is working in Wonder Learning as a Tableau coach to teach data modelling and visualisation with Tableau. He was volunteering as Assistant Admin Manager at the Marathon Science School and is currently a member of London Merit Association, which supports youth development in the Muslim community. He believes that sustainable and circular strategies as crucial to solving our problems, and that designers will therefore play a significant role as decision-makers.

Research Summary

Selman's work focuses on Circular Economy, energy, building materials, low carbon technologies and a circular vision for sustainable growth in the built environment in islands and cities. He has a background in architecture and environmental design and engineering. He is currently a PhD student at Energy Institute.


Current policies have largely concentrated on increasing energy efficiency in the built environment because of its high impacts on overall energy demands. This thesis concentrates mainly on reducing energy usage in buildings and improving their performance rather than the life-cycle of the materials for buildings and technologies used.

Circular Economy is a promising and more holistic concept for the life-cycle of buildings and the values associated with it. The current Circular Economy approach has mainly focused on the industrial sector, and any application of Circular Economy principles to housing and architecture is still in its infancy. Therefore, this study aims to create a comprehensive approach by taking an integrated modelling approach that allows combining technologies, materials and better design.

The integrated approach is combining (i) carbon content of the material and waste flows and their territorial and consumption impacts, (ii) Energy System Modelling (ESM) and the impact on carbon emissions through the adoption of low-carbon technologies, and (iii) Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of selected low carbon technologies to achieve the 2050 UK Government emissions.

This research contributes to the understanding of the transition to the high penetration of low carbon technologies in the domestic sector, by analysing the carbon content of technologies production, energy usage for construction of buildings and materials extraction, together with carbon emissions from energy demand in buildings.
