BIO
Stergiani (Stella) Tsoli is an Epidemiologist and a Research Fellow at the MRC Unit for Lifelong Health and Aging. Her research focuses on healthy aging and social determinants of health over the lifecourse and the effects of social connections on health.
She is leading coordinated analyses across three UK birth cohorts (NSHD, BCS70 and NCDS) constructing longitudinal Frailty Indices (FIs) from prospective follow-up assessments to describe frailty in individuals aged 30 to 64 as part of a NIHR Policy Research project aiming to understand frailty in younger people using nationally representative birth cohorts and analysis of Hospital Episode Statistics.
She is also at the final stage of her PhD in Social Epidemiology at the Centre for Longitudinal Studies, Social Research Institute at UCL. Her doctoral research focused on the longitudinal association of social participation and engagement on biomarkers of physical health and physical activity, using data from the National Child Development Study (NCDS) and the 1970 British Cohort Study (BCS70). During her PhD, she was a Visiting fellow at the lab of Professor Ichiro Kawachi at Harvard University.
Stella has received awards from the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRC) and Medical Research Council (MRC). Additionally, she served as the Early Career Representative and a member of the Executive Committee of the Society for Longitudinal and Lifecourse Studies (SLLS) (2017-2019).
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Stella alongside her PhD worked as a Senior Health Analyst at the UK ‘s Health Security Agency (UKHSA), Department of Health and Social Care. She has previously held positions in the International Initiative for Impact Evaluation (3ie), the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, the World Health Organisation in Geneva and Doctors of the World. She has a Master of Philosophy in Public Health (funded by MRC) from University of Cambridge and a BSc in Environmental Science at University of the Aegean, Greece.
