  • Faculty of Laws

Profesor Steven Vaughan is Professor of Law and Professional Ethics in the Faculty of Laws at University College London. His research spans various fields: environmental law; lawyers' ethics and regulation; legal education; diversity; and corporate governance. In each, he is interested in regulatory complexity and the often mismatch between 'law in books' and 'law in action'. A former 'ESRC Future Leader', he has undertaken commissioned research work for a variety of bodies, including the Solicitors Regulation Authority and the Legal Sustainability Alliance. Since 2007, Steven has published four books (two monographs; and two edited collections) and over 30 chapters and journal papers in world-leading fora in addition to various research reports.

At UCL, Steven is co-Director (with Professor Maria Lee) of the Centre for Law and the Environment, co-Director (with Dr Simon Lock) of qUCL (UCL's queer research network), and created and co-leads the Faculty of Laws Staff-Student LGBT+ Network. He is the Faculty REF2021 Impact Lead. Away from the university, Steven's expertise on the ethics, diversity and regulation of the legal profession has led to appointments to: the Education and the Policy Committees of the Solicitors Regulation Authority; the LGBT Lawyers Division of The Law Society; and the Research Strategy Group of the Legal Services Board. He was the Chair of the Joint Academic Stage Board (2012-2014) and a Panel Member of the Legal Education and Training Review Steering Group.

Steven’s career began with almost a decade in the City as a solicitor (first at Freshfields, then at Latham & Waktins), before moving full time into academia. As a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, he is fully committed to developing approaches to teaching that influence, motivate and inspire students to learn. Keen that his work engages with an audience beyond the academy, Steven has spoken at the Hay Festival of Literature and Arts and written for a number of media outlets (including The Times, The Guardian and The Lawyer). He has also held Visiting Fellowships at Stanford University, the University of Melbourne and the Frank J. Kelley Institute of Ethics (at Michigan State University).
