Biography

Dr Sonali Wayal is a Research Associate in the Centre for Sexual Health and HIV Research at University College London. She has a Masters in Political Science from University of Pune, India following which she worked as a Lecturer in Political Science in Fergusson College and Abasaheb Garware College. Subsequently she did her training in Human Rights and Advocacy from the National Centre for Advocacy Studies in Pune, India and worked in the Centre for Advocacy in Mental Health in Pune and then in Positive People for developing a HIV prevention programme among sex workers in Goa. Subsequently she was awarded a British Chevening and University of Edinburgh Scholarship to pursue MSc in Public Health Research in the University of Edinburgh in 2005-2006 and an Overseas Students Awards to pursue a PhD in University College London in 2008. She is passionate about global health, human rights, and access to Health Care (both physical and mental health care).

Research Summary

Dr Sonali Wayal's is currently engaged in research focusing on understanding sexual health inequalities due to ethnicity and sexuality, and HIV and STI prevention. She is coordinating a NIHR Health Protection Research (NIHR) Unit project on Blood Borne and Sexually Transmitted Infections among Black Caribbeans and Men who have sex with men in collaboration with the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and Public Health England: https://www.ucl.ac.uk/news/news-articles/0414/020414-nihr-research-unit-blood-sti She is a Social Science Advisory Group member for the PROUD trial examining the impact on gay men of using pre-exposure prophalyxis: http://www.proud.mrc.ac.uk/social_science_study_component.aspx and a co-investigator of a study investigating feasibility and acceptability of home sampling kits to increase the uptake of HIV testing among Black Africans in the UK:  http://www.haus.org.uk/  She has successfully secured £417,859 of competitive grant funding from the NIHR. Her research interest are using surveillance data to understand changing epidemiology of STIs/HIV, understanding the risk factors and contextual drivers of health inequalities in the UK, and health services research to enhance access to testing and care and treatment using behavioural, digital, and health service interventions. 

Teaching Summary

Dr Wayal provides teaching assistance on the MSc module on Epidemiology and Public Health, and on Statistics in UCL.
