Biography

I work on the MA in English Education and the English with Drama PGCE at UCL IOE.

I joined the IOE part-time to teach on the English with Drama PGCE, around ten years ago, while still teaching in school and having taught Drama (mostly) for over twenty years in schools and colleges in Birmingham and London.

I was also involved in Theatre in Education, youth theatre and projects involving young people who were newly arrived in South London schools. We received Arts Council funding for some of these projects and experimented with media production alongside improvisational drama. These activities inform my on-going research interests.

Research Summary

I completed my MA in Media, Culture and Communication at the Institute of Education in 2011, with a dissertation about primary school children learning through filmmaking (see Bryer 2013).

I was awarded my PhD in October 2020, entitled What are the affordances of role in learning through transmedia forms of pedagogy?

My thesis is the culmination of ten years of research with school-based and IOE colleagues and our student teachers involving drama and mobile technologies, documented in my publications.

Teaching Summary

I am tutor for the English with Drama PGCE group.

I was programme leader for the MA English Education 2019-2021 and joint-programme leader 2021-2022.
