Prior to joining CEGE as UKCRIC Senior Research Associate in 2016 . I was Centre Co-Ordinator and Senior Research Associate for ICIF for the
International Centre for Infrastructure Futures (ICIF) project (part of UCL STEaPP). The
ICIF project was a collaborative, multi-disciplinary, Industry facing
project between 6 UK Universities (Cranfield University, University of
Bristol, University of Southampton, University of Sussex and University
of Brighton) funded by EPSRC and ESRC.
Much of my ICIF research, has continued with UKCRIC. In particular my ICIF work included included:
- How
mental models/mindset influence our attitudes towards, expectations of
and decisions regarding infrastructure, and whether a set of guiding
rules can be created for approaching infrastructure challenges
- Work in partnership with iBUILD and Infrastructure UK on Infrastructure performance indicators
- The long term Infrastructure challenges identified by industry practitioners, and in partnership with iBUILD the challenges of making a business case for investment in Resilience
- Whether a Needs Assessment of the type proposed by the Armitt report can begin from identification of the outcomes our societies expect infrastructure to deliver and from this identify solution-neutral infrastructure needs to create transparent discussion on the infrastructure solutions we choose.
- Whether natural processes can be viewed as Infrastructure-like, to allow innovative provision of our infrastructure needs
- Informed decisions taken at Anglian Water Pesticide Strategy meetings.
- Led to implementation of a catchment-level decision support tool to guide investment decisions for potable water supply and catchment Management
- Led to further research at Cranfield University.
I also hold an Executive MBA from Cranfield University School of Management.
I also hold MSc in Economics for Natural Resource and Environmental Management. investments

My UKCRIC and C-DICE research focuses on complex infrastructure systems as enablers of societally beneficial outcomes. In particular on the:
System characteristics (interdependencies, emergent properties and dynamic context) necessary for normal operations to enable the systemic realisation of systemic outcomes.
expectated qualities of desired Outcome (safe; reliable; resilient to the disruptive impacts of climate change and other strategic challenges; enhance the quality of the local environment; and helps catalyse an urgent transformation to a net zero GHG emission economy.
My research is systemic in scope, and includes challenges of how we systemically govern, regulate, manage (including plan, design, procure, construct, operate, maintain, enhance, repurpose, measure, account for, value and incentivise investment in) complex infrastructure systems for the safe emergence of these system characteristics.
I collaborate with colleagues from across UKCRIC and with colleagues from professional bodies, industry, government bodies and international partners. These Collaboration have led to published research outputs including:
All Research Papers shown on UCL IRIS
Reports and Literature Reviews for the UK National Infrastructure Commission (NIC): the Resilience of Digitally Connected Infrastructure Systems (DCIS); Emergent Behaviours in Systems Comparable to Infrastructure; Analytical Approaches To Resilience and Questions for Resilience Assessment
Reports on the Resilience of infrastructure systems to Black Sky Hazards, produced with The Electric Infrastructure Security Council (EIS Council) as part of two academic workshopsto organise Workshops and publish reports.
A briefing report for Industry group CIRIA - Interdependence analysis for systemically resilient infrastructure systems
Work with Infrastructure UK to develop a methodology for outcome-oriented infrastructure performance indicators.
