Biography

Todd attained his PhD (Tropical Medicine and Epidemiology) from the University of Liverpool (UoL) in 2021. His MSc (Public Health in Developing Countries) was completed at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) in 2001. Prior to pursuing a PhD, he worked 12 years as an epidemiologist with Médecins Sans Frontiers (MSF) and Médecins du Monde (MDM). This included 7 years as field epidemiologist in several subSaharan locations (incl. DRC, South Sudan, Zimbabwe, Nigeria). Todd also worked as Senior Health Advisor and emergency/outbreak epidemiologist for MSF and MDM during headquarter postings in Paris and Amsterdam. Prior to his work in Malawi, Todd worked for 2 years with GlaxoSmithKline BV (formerly Novartis Vaccines), leading the epidemiology portfolio in work to develop a GBS vaccine.


Prior to his 20+ years in infectious diseases epidemiology, Todd trained in the field of forestry and natural resource conservation. Todd lived in coastal northern California, teaching field biology at an independent secondary school and leading a number of local environmental campaigns. One of these led to the 1999 creation of the Headwaters State Forest Reserve along California’s Redwood Coast.



Research Summary

Todd Swarthout is an infectious diseases epidemiologist. His research interests are in developing robust methods for evaluating vaccine implementation and effectiveness to optimise impact on reducing the burden of vaccine-preventable diseases in low-resourced high mortality settings. His work is policy driven to best contribute to protecting vulnerable groups and contributing to health equity.

Teaching Summary

Based in Malawi from 2015-2021 with the Malawi-Liverpool-Wellcome Research Programme, Todd worked 4 years with Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) building a portfolio of projects in the field of vaccines. Affiliated with University College London since 2019, Todd continues to expand that portfolio in collaboration with LSTM, University of Liverpool (UoL) and other collaborators. Activities include leading the PAVE Study, a 4-year programme to evaluate the effectiveness of an alternative WHO-approved PCV vaccine schedule, including a booster dose, in Malawi. Since 2021, Todd has been based full-time in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
