Dr Tasos Varoudis
Bartlett School of Architecture
22 Gordon St.
  • Senior Research Associate
  • The Bartlett School of Architecture
  • Faculty of the Built Environment

Tasos Varoudis is a registered architect, computer scientist and creative designer/technologist. He studied his Diploma (MSc) in Architectural Engineering in National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) and his Computing Engineering DIC and MSc at the Imperial College London.

In sum, his projects, installations and research is driven by ‘code, form and space’ in order to create experiences that playfully challenge our perception of spaces, vision and objects. By creating senses of space that transcend the immediate physical environment of the viewer, he researches how the elements of architecture, spatial design and ambient technology can shape the interrelation between perception and movement in architectural spaces. Combining traditional design methods and aesthetics with programmatic design, generative systems, computer vision, natural human-computer interaction and ambient technology, he seeks to blur the boundaries between physical and virtual space.

This translates in a creative mixture of spatial analysis and computation which he always explores its limits.

Research Groups
Research Summary

Tasos' research ranges from architectural computation and the analysis of hybrid architectural spaces to architecture and human-computer interaction (HCI).

In the Space Group he leads the developments on the spatial and architectural computation for the next generation analyses and software.

In CHI2012 he co-organised the workshop: Ar-CHI-tecture: Architecture and Interaction, where the rise of ubiquitous computing leads to a convergence between the areas of architectural design and HCI.

Teaching Summary

Since 2010, Tasos has taught on the MSc in Adaptive Architecture and Computation (MSc AAC).

In the past he has extensively collaborated with Architectural Design Studio 1 of Royal College of Arts (RCA) and was also invited to contribute and teach at the Diploma Unit 1 of the Architectural Association (AA).
