Research Summary

EMOTIVE (Storytelling through cultural heritage)

In this EC funded project, I research on the linkages between heritage and empathy and ask ‘how can heritage foster empathy?’ How can heritage sites and museums provide effective ground for affective and emotional interpretation? As part of this position I am working with a range of specialists, from several different institutions, to build digital tools for museums and heritage sites (e.g. digital apps, VR) and we are carrying out evaluation and testing in several locations around the world.

Radical Death and Early State Formation in Ancient Mesopotamia

In this AHRC funded international archaeology project which collaborates with Ege University (Turkey), Natural History Museum London, I research and develop effective heritage strategies for local museum and archaeological sites to engage with local communities in southeast Turkey as well as Kurdish communities in London who are from southeast Turkey. As part of my work, I asses heritage perception of local community members and develop educational sources that can be used at local museum, local schools

PhD in Cultural Heritage, Institute of Archaeology, UCL

For my PhD research, I investigated the use and abuse of archaeology and heritage in Turkey via an analysis of museum structures, object displays, site management plans, on-site education programmes, school history curricula, and existing informal heritage education programs in Turkey. In my dissertation, I evaluated education and learning theories to make historical context.  I specifically worked on three UNESCO World Heritage sites (Ani, Catalhoyuk and Hattusa) and surrounded communities to measure heritage perceptions of local communities to find out how education and cultural resources management impact on people.

Teaching Summary

I teach in several modules across MA Museums and Galleries in Education programme graduate-level courses, including ‘Issues in Museums and Galleries in Education’, ‘Responsive Museums: Inclusion and Outreach in Practice’. As part of this position, I coordinate and teach in ‘Material and Virtual Culture: Transforming the Museum and Gallery Experience’ and ‘Constructing and Interpreting Heritage Culture’ modules.
