Biography

Vasiliki holds a PhD in Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) from the Centre for Environmental Policy of Imperial College London (ICL). Through her research, she has worked with universities, primary and secondary schools in the UK towards the integration of sustainability and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into curricula. She also holds a BSc in Biology and an MSc in Science and Environmental Education. She is an experienced science teacher, environmental educator and was ESD coordinator and teacher trainer in a large school district in Athens Greece (coordinating the ESD projects of more than 150 schools, ~30,000 students, ~5,000 teachers), where she contributed to positive community change. 

She has also served in the Directorate of Secondary Education of Piraeus part of the Greek Ministry of Education and has experience in developing educational policy. She has also contributed to environmental policy evaluations and behavioural change projects as Senior Social Scientist at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs though a secondment from ICL. She is consultant in the area of ocean education and she has worked with the community interest company (CIC) Common Seas to integrate ocean literacy and plastic pollution into primary and secondary curricula in Greece. She has published her research outputs in important journals in the fields of sustainability and education and has presented in national and international conferences such as the UNFCCC COP26 in Glasgow and Advance HE Teaching and Learning.

She was visiting teacher at the European Learning Laboratory for the Life Sciences (ELLS) of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Germany and has organised teacher-training activities for high school teachers in Molecular Biology, Bioinformatics and cutting edge biology techniques. She is member of the Impact of Materials on Society (IMOS) and Focus on Sustainability (FoS) Subcommittees of the Materials Research Society (MRS) and has implemented a series of sustainability workshops to empower change-makers to pursue the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)  in University settings, a role she is amplifying as member of the SDSN UK network.

Research Summary


Vasiliki is currently member of the IOE forum of Sustainability in Education as well as chair of the Regional Centre of Expertise (RCE) on ESD, part of a global network mandated by the Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability of the United Nations University the aims to advance regional sustainability. She is one of the Directors of CIC Vision Nexus a not for profit (spin-out) company of ICL that aims to engage the public with sustainability through Virtual Reality (VR).

Her research interests lie in the areas of embedding sustainability education into curricula or all levels of education, education transformation in the Anthropocene, use of VR to engage learners in sustainability as well as the psychological responses of young people to climate change and other sustainability challenges.


Teaching Summary
Vasiliki is Lecturer (Teaching) in Education at the Institute of Education (IOE) of University College London (UCL) and has worked as Science module leader on the Teach First Programme since 2021. She is currently module leader of the Principles of Teaching and Learning module of the STEP (secondary teacher education) programme and Academic tutor for the MA Science Education. In the past she worked as science teacher for a decade in Greek secondary schools as well as teacher trainer of science and environmental educators. She has also held the position of Teaching Fellow in the Department of Life Sciences of ICL in which she co-convened modules in ecology and evolution and ecology fieldwork. She has also contributed to the teaching of the MSc in Environmental Technology, an interdisciplinary programme that aims to nurture sustainability professionals at CEP of ICL. For this last programme she has also contributing through the development of a framework for integrating and assessing sustainability competences in students.
