She has a degree in Town Planning and a Postgraduate Diploma and MSc in Urban Design from the Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL. She's a Chartered Member of RTPI and an Urban Design Group Recognised Practitioner.

She is currently a Research Associate and Teaching Assistant at the Bartlett School of Planning, working with Professor Matthew Carmona as Manager of the Place Alliance and on a number of research projects

Before joining UCL as a Research Assistant, she has worked on several large scale urban projects with different design practices in London. While at Burns + Nice, she prepared several urban realm studies (Vauxhall, London Cycle Superhighways, Ebbsfleet, Tottenham Court Road) which considered the integration with area master/action plans, development plans, urban design and public realm strategies, streetscape and transport infrastructure. At Martha Schwarz, she worked on a masterplan in Seoul, Korea and a project in Vienna, Austria.

She is experienced in urban planning and public realm design and has worked on a variety of projects in a multitude of contexts, including masterplanning, urban design, regeneration and architecture. She has specific experience of the planning, environmental assessment and design of transport infrastructure and public realm projects in London and related public consultation processes.

Research Summary

Valentina is a Research Associate at the Bartlett School of Planning where she manages the Place Alliance, chaired by Professor Matthew Carmona. She joined the Place Alliance management team at UCL following her time at Farrells where she was hired to liaise with UCL on the development of the Place Alliance and the Farrell Review.

She is currently working on two research projects as part of her work for the Place Alliance:

  • Design Skills in Local Authorities - funded and sposored by the UDG and Place Alliance, and conducted by UCL. The research objective is to conduct a survey of urban design and related design skills within local planning authorities in England and how they have changed over the last five years.  The results will allow us to determine how the design capacity in local planning authorities has been affected by the squeeze in local government resources.
  • Reviewing Design Review (in London) - funded and sponsored by UDL, TFL, the GLA, and Place Alliance, and conducted by UCL. A research study focusing on Design Review as it is being  practised since the demise of the publicly-funded CABE in 2011.  We hope to provide a snapshot of the provision of DR now that the market has opened up to private sector organisations.

Previous work as a Researcher includes:

  • Evaluating the governance of design in the built environment – the CABE experiment and beyond
  • Cricklewood Satisfaction Survey - Cricklewood Project, Mayor’s Outer London Fund Programme
  • Design Coding - Diffusion of Practice in England
  • CLUES interactive tool testing: Energy in the Locality – A survey of Local Authorities in England
  • Research Excellence Framework (REF): Design Governance in the Built Environment
  • Ruling Places: A pilot study to test an ‘essential urbanism’ approach to place design

Teaching Summary

Valentina has worked as a Teaching Assistant at the Bartlett School of Planning, UCL and taught for several consecutive years on 'Urban Design: Place Making" (a module for the RTPI accredited Urban and Regional Planning Masters course) and "Urban Design: Theory to Practice"

These modules includes the preparation of a masterplan proposal and urban design framework for a London area, envisioning its future redevelopment underpinned by a strategic vision and urban design principles that are further developed into detailed proposals focusing on the quality of the public realm.

It is taught primarily through the undertaking and completion of project work with tutors available for individual and group tuition during the studio workshops.

Valentina also assists Colin Haylock with teaching on Urban Design: Guidance, Incentive & Control. This module focusses on means to influence design outcomes that stop short of actual scheme design while stressing the vital importance of making positive propositions for change.
