Valerie Isham has a PhD in Statistics from the University of London (Imperial College)
for a thesis on multidimensional point processes. She joined UCL in 1978 and
has been a professor since 1992. She was previously Head of Department from 1996-2002 and again from 2010-2011.
She served as President of the Royal Statistical Society in 2011 and 2012.She currently chairs the Biometrioka Trust and the Scientitific Steering Committee of the Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences, Cambridge, UK.

Applied probability: broadly, the development and application of stochastic models;
in particular, spatial/spatio-temporal processes and point processes including
i) the generic development of models for point processes and determination of
their properties;
ii) development of models for spatial and spatio-temporal processes arising in the physical
sciences, and especially in hydrology (eg soil moisture and precipitation);
iii) models for applications in the life and medical sciences, focussing particularly on
population processes, epidemics and the transmission dynamics of infection and information
on networks.
