I am an Associate Professor in Language and Cognition at UCL. I gained the DPhil in Experimental Psychology from the University of Oxford. After the completion of my doctoral training, I joined City University of Hong Kong as an Assistant Professor, and was later promoted to Associate Professor. I am currently serving as the Co-Editor-In-Chief for the Journal of Research in Reading, and the Panel Member of the Humanities and Social Sciences Panel of the Research Grants Council of Hong Kong.
My main research interest lies in the field of developmental psychology, with an emphasis on language and literacy development. My specific areas of research include second/ foreign language acquisition, language learning anxiety and motivation, and reading development and difficulties. I am particularly interested in investigating how different factors affect language and literacy development (e.g., genetic contribution and home literacy environment) and developing effective methods for facilitating language acquisition in linguistically diverse children (e.g., interactive shared reading and creative literacy activities). My research has involved a range of approaches including behavioural genetics, cognitive and linguistic theories and experimental, longitudinal and intervention designs.
I am the head of Year 1 for the BSc Psychology and Language Sciences programme. I teach Bilingualism and Second Language Acquisition, and Academic Tutorials. Also, I supervise undergraduate, masters and PhD research projects.
