Biography

Dr Yuanchang Liu is a Lecturer in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, University College London. Before joining the department, he was a Research Fellow in Robotic Vision and Autonomous Vehicles at Surrey Space Centre, University of Surrey. Dr Yuanchang Liu received a BEng degree in Control Engineering from Dalian University of Technology in 2010, MSc degree in Power Systems Engineering, and a PhD degree in Marine Control Engineering, both from University College London in 2011 and 2016, respectively. Dr Liu’s research focuses on automation and autonomy, with a special interest in the exploration of technologies for sensing and perception, and guidance and control of intelligent and autonomous vehicles.

Research Summary

Dr Yuanchang Liu’s research mainly focuses on robotics and autonomous systems (RAS) with a special interest in marine application including surface and underwater marine vehicles. With his expertise in RAS, Dr Yuanchang Liu has undertaken influential research work in sensor fusion, planning and control and machine learning, with original research outputs actively published in leading international journals and conferences. Dr Yuanchang Liu’s research is well supported by various national and international research funding agencies. At present, his research activities mainly include three pillars: 1) deep reinforcement learning powered autonomous navigation system, 2) statistical machine learning in robotics and control and 3) the application of digital twin in metal additive manufacturing.

Teaching Summary
Dr Yuanchang Liu is currently teaching following modules:
1) MECH0004 Mechanical Engineering Practical Skills 1;
2) MECH0032 New and Renewable Energy Systems.

Dr Yuanchang Liu provides supervision on third year UGT individual project (Undergraduate Individual Project), MSc individual projects and MSc Group Design Project. For students enrolled to Robotics and Computation MSc in UCL Computer Science, he also offers individual projects. To promote an active connection for students with industries, most of these projects involve industry partners.
