Gains and Losses: Changes in Representation, Knowledge and Pedagogy in Learning Resources
£169,963, Economic and Social Research Council A research project on changes in textbook design and their implications of learning. We address two major questions. First, what exactly has changed in the multi-modal design of learning resources for secondary school students over the last 75 years? What shifts in the use of image, writing, layout, colour, and other modes of reprentation have taken place? Is image indeed becoming central in all learning resources? Second, what is it that may have been gained and what may have been lost in potentials for learning as a result of these changes? Are the changes in design leading to intended or unintended changes in what and how students can learn, or to changes in what and how students can learn, or changes in their control over what and how they learn?
