Musicianship and Motivation in the Instrumental Lesson
£50,791, Esmee Fairbairn Charitable Trust. The project draws upon aspects of informal and aural music learning, in order to develop and test new instrumental teaching-and-learning strategies and materials; and to observe, analyse and evaluate their implementation. This is a pilot project. The aims of the pilot and the proposal main study project which it is hoped will follow, are to: -increase motivation, enjoyment and commitment among instrumental pupils from all sections of society; and reduce dropout rates from instrumental lessons; -provide professional development for instrumental teachers, including building bridges between the Musical Futures informal learning classroom model, the government’s Wider Opportunities initiative, other recommendations within the Music Manifesto, and the day-to-day work of classroom and instrumental teachers; -develop instrumental teachers’ confidence and ability to introduce pupils to a range of aural musical skills which have historically been given little prominence in classical instrumental lessons; -increase pupils’ aural skills, especially their ability to play back what they hear, and to work out music by ear; -foster pupils’ general listening skills and musical appreciation, enabling them to listen attentively and purposively to a range of classical and other music; -foster pupils’ arranging skills, enabling them to arrange ‘real’ music on their own instrument, without reliance on a notated score; -increase pupils’ technical facility on their instrument, by incorporating a fluid ‘real-time’, complementary way to approach learning new pieces; -increase pupils’ improvisatory and creative abilities by making them more aware of ways in which they can arrange and compose their own music; -increase pupils’ autonomy and understanding as musicians and as learners.
