Screens and the Social Landscape - Designing for the 21st Century Research Cluster
This Digital Design Research Cluster established shared principles of communication and practice among professionals and academics through focusing on the 'screen' as a common reference point. Traditional notions and functions of the screen are continuously shifting and alongside this the development of mobile and ubiquitous technologies. The Research Cluster explored the 'screen' and related information technologies, the implications for how people communicate and interact in public spaces as well as in their display and function in the urban environment, museums and galleries. Key objectives
Communication and practices: To identify the forms and processes of communication and practices of different disciplines by examining the ways in which screen features in their work. Activities: To deliver a program of innovative activities across a wide range of people working in screen and design. Collaboration: To develop working methods of collaboration at all stages of the screen-design process and product utilization which will be disseminated through the www. Conceptions of the screen: To explore the changing concept of screen and its implications across the disciplines and the social landscape more broadly. Program of Activities: The program of activities consisted of four inter-related elements: interdisciplinary workshops; a public lecture series; an interactive website; and a public exhibition. Framework: an interdisciplinary framework of ideas relevant to the specific instance of screen and spaces of display (e.g. museums and galleries) was established. Research Cluster Membership
