Training in the Quantitative Synthesis of Intervention Research Findings in Education and Social Sciences
£26,362, Economic and Social Research Council. 1/04/08 → 31/03/11. The initiative aims to extend provision and training and development activities for researchers and for research students in quantitiative synthesis across the research 'life-course'. It will be offered regionally across the UK (inBelfast, Bristol, Durham, Edinburgh, London and York) primarily through face-to-face training, but developing a legacy of practical resources and workshop materials which will be available electronically. The aim is to complement and extend exisiting provision in systematic reviewing and controlled trials in education and in research synthesis more broadly. A further aim is in developing understanding of the methodology and exploring the warrant of its findings as this has an important role to play in building capacity in education research especially in the 'what works' and evidence-informed policy debates as well as building capacity in quantitative methods in education more broadly. In undertaking metaanalysis, the synthesis of existing studies inevitably draws attention the methodologies used and to some of their weaknesses in design or reporting. An indirect aim of the initiative is therefore to help to improve the quality of research design and reporting of future evaluations and experiments in education.
