Low-cost physical solar simulator
The development of a low-cost physical solar simulator facility specifically for investigating the effects of direct sunlight on heat sensitive materials and devices. The Bartlett is investigating the behaviour of a number of devices with passive responses to sunlight, this facility aids rapid-prototyping by emulating realistic conditions. This allows the thermal behaviour to be characterised in particular the duty-cycling of thermal actuators. The facility uses a multi-axis KUKA robot to physically emulate solar tracking. This allow the target to remain in a fixed orientation with respect to gravity which is necessary for a range of prototypes that involve fluid-flow. The facility is the first at UCL to use a full-spectrum light-engine based on plasma as the radiation source.
