Bhutan National Inventory
Recently (2014) commenced the UNESCO South Asian Silk Roads project, covering China, India, Nepal, and Bhutan (which will hopefully extend to include Bangladesh, Myanmar and Pakistan). This research explores the trans-Himalayan routes (including a new doctoral student in 2015 studying the Tea & Horse routes between Yunnan and South Asia). As part of this programme we are working to help to develop Bhutan’s first digital National Inventory, using the ARCHES 3.0 system developed by the Getty Conservation Institute and the World Monuments Fund. We are supporting this work though systems development, capacity building in heritage inventory theory and practice and approaches to the uses of spatial data and Geographic Information Systems. The work is being undertaken in collaboration with the Division for Conservation of Heritage Sites (DCHS), within the Department of Culture of the Ministry of Home and Cultural Affairs (MoHCA) of Bhutan, and supported by the UNESCO via the Korean Funds-in-Trust.
