Suspended Fabric Chimney for Solar Updraft Towers
This project investigates the potential of using helium supported chimneys made of fabric in order to drive Solar Updraft Tower plants. These plants require extremely tall towers (~1000m) to reach economical viability. A self-supporting structure can potentially reach an unlimited height. The project focuses on 1) Thermodynamic modelling the plant system to be able to predict power output from given overall dimensions. 2) Modelling and designing fabric solutions to the chimney problem. Prototyping is ongoing.
