Language outcomes for cochlear-implanted children
The Cochlear Implant Programme at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) offers on-going assessment and monitoring for children who receive a Cochlear Implant. There is currently a lack of research describing the auditory comprehension and expressive language development for English-speaking children who receive implants in the early stages of life. This project will comprise of a retrospective review of formal assessment data (e.g. Preschool Language Scales 5 and Pre-School CELF, edition 2) which is gathered annually for every child on the Cochlear Implant Programme (until 5 years post implant). The project aims to profile auditory comprehension and expressive language development for children who receive a cochlear implant. The project will enable key areas of need to be identified within these populations, and support discussions with families about prognosis, assessment, intervention and education support. It will support local therapists to better understand the typical language trajectory for children with a cochlear implant.
