SPIRAL Scientific Pedestrian Interaction Research in an Accessibility Laboratoryople with Learning Difficulties
SPIRAL is a project funded by The Royal Society to facilitate collaboration between ARG and the University of Pisa. The project involves the use of the PAMELA laboratory to conduct experiments in various aspects of pedestrian capacity and the subsequent analysis of the data in Pisa. This year we have run experiments to study the capacity drop effects of pedestrians when passing through bottlenecks and when entering and leaving buses where the vertical and horizontal gap between the bus and the kerb are changed. Initial analysis of the data indicates some interesting evidence of the changes in capacity arising as pedestrian density or flow rate increase. In addition, the influence of the vertical and horizontal gaps between the bus and the kerb suggests that there are some important capacity reductions which arise as these increase, with a corresponding increase in overall boarding/alighting times. More detailed analysis is underway and more experiments to complement these will be conducted this year.
