Understanding the impact of progressive neurological speech disorders on interaction
This research aims to investigate the interaction between people with progessive speech loss due to neurological disorders (e.g. Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis and MND/ALS) and their families. Patients, families and health professionals will be interviewed before a series of natural interaction video recordings is made. The videos will be analysed using a method called Conversation Analysis (CA). This will identify interaction strategies and problems. A clinical tool based on the interview and video analysis will be developed for use by speech and language therapists. It will be designed for therapists who at present have no structured means by which to describe interaction beyond standard speech perception and intelligibility measures.
