Reindigenisation and Society in the Andes: Peru and Bolivia, 1790-1940
This project explores the little-known topic of reindigenisation in nineteenth-century Peru and Bolivia, understood as the greater presence and protagonism of the indigenous in national life. Reindigenisation was first detected and interpreted in demographic terms, when it was discovered that the early and middle decades of the nineteenth century represented the only era since the European invasions of South America when Peru's native population not only grew strongly in absolute terms, but even recovered marginally as a proportion of the whole. This project takes the topic beyond the demographic dimension, to explore the implications of reindigenisation for national life more broadly, whether in politics, the economy, and culture.
