Conservation with development in Mkomazi, Tanzania
In 1951 Mkomazi was gazetted as a conservation area; in 1988 the Maasai herds grazing the area were evicted. This research documents the ecological impacts (both positive and negative) of pastoralist land use on the environment, and measures the impacts of eviction on the Maasai production system, on livestock performance, food production, diet, nutritional status, health, welfare and livestock holdings. Core funding from ODA was supplemented through broader collaboration with the Oxford Zoology Department, the International Institute for Environment and Development, the Royal Geographical Society, the Museum of Natural History and other UK and Tanzanian agencies.
