Hydrological monitoring of the U Minh Thoung Nature Reserve, Kien Giang Province, Vietnam
Development of a site-specific hydrological monitoring programme for the largest remaining area of peat swamp (Melaleuca) forest in the Mekong Delta. The focus was on the dynamics of the groundwater levels within the Reserve’s shallow peat and their relationship with surface water levels in the adjacent canal systems that had been responsible for extensive drying out and wastage of peat. Hydrological research was integrated with ecological surveys in order to establish water level requirements of different species (in particular Melaleuca). Training was also provided to Reserve staff in hydrological observations and analysis. Funding source: CARE International in Vietnam.
