'Intra-minority relations' and transnational political space: North Indian Muslims in Bangladesh, the US and the UK - BA/Leverhulme
How do ‘intra-minority’ relations interrogate Muslim identities in the UK and to
what extent do they impact experiences of citizenship? Drawing on previous
research among ‘Urdu-speakers’ in Bangladesh, the project examines the
trajectories of those who fled the region during Liberation in 1971 and established themselves in the UK. As Urdu-speaking Muslims of North Indian origin they have been labelled both ‘Biharis’ and ‘Stranded Pakistanis’ in Bangladesh yet their links with the Indian, Pakistani or Bengali communities in this country are unknown. The project examines how this memory of conflict has been carried forward into the diaspora and considers the political subjectivities produced. It investigates whether the increasing role of religion assuages such tensions, and the extent to which gender, generation, class and space inform or challenge ethnic, national and religious solidarities. It expands interest in ‘hidden minorities’, as well as in relations between and within minorities, bringing historicity and spatiality to bear on our understanding of Muslim identities in the UK.
