Travel and Social Sustainability in Ulaanbataar's Ger Districts
The aim of this project is to establish research into travel behaviour among residents of Ulaanbaatar's ger districts. The limited available data suggests that ger district inhabitants experience highly unequal access to employment, education and opportunities of the city because of problems with existing transport services, the spatial structure of the city and first and last mile access issues within the ger districts themselves. This project seeks to deepen our understanding of ger community mobility and problems faced by different traveller groups in relation to the following key question: What are the key accessibility issues for ger district residents, and how might these be addressed through transport and land use policies? Following on from this question, the three objectives of the work are: (i) identify appropriate data collection methods for capturing current and latent travel behaviour; (ii) undertake an extended pilot to characterise mobility demand and travel in a representative district; (iii) discuss and develop findings with key policy actors and consider policy implications, including for Mongolia’s 2030 Vision.
