Understanding the nexus between social drug use and the negative impacts of the illegal drugs trade in the UK, Mexico and Uruguay
Supervision of PhD research: This research aims to understand why there has been a failure to form a nexus between social drug use and the negative impacts of the illegal drugs trade, focusing on the impacts on society (e.g. violence, homicide, exploitation). The expected outcomes are to determine how aware social drug users are of these negative impacts, as it is rare that these impacts directly effect users in Western society. Furthermore, assessment of whether increased awareness of these issues is likely to influence social drug use will be conducted through focus groups and pilot intervention techniques. This research will address how we can target social drug users and encourage the formation of this nexus. Data collection will also be conducted in one or two Latin American cities where these negative impacts are more prevalent and severe, allowing for a comparison of results.
