Analysis of the reach and impact of private sector childcare in England
The Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) has estimated that the government spends £5.8 billion a year on early years. This entitlement is for up to 30 hours a week of free early childhood education. The IFS also points out that most of these places have been delivered by the private sector. The aim of this research is to provide evidence of the reach and impact of private sector childcare in England. We will investigate the fiscal, planning and other regulatory frameworks that govern the market, and explore the nature and type of information, including fiscal information, which is open to public scrutiny. We aim to provide a more detailed picture of the operation of the childcare market, in order to inform policy making.
