Techno-economic Assessment of Methanol Production from Basic Oxygen Furnace Gas in the Steel Manufacturing Industry
The main objective of this collaborative project is to explore the economic feasibly for methanol production from BasicOxygen Furnace (BOF) gas and biomass based syngas. Using BOF gas from the SSAB steel plant in Sweden as a test case, UCL will assemble an overall process model integrated with a biomass gasifier, syngas conditioning unit and a methanol synthesis unit in order to evaluate the impacts on the mass and energy balances. The overall process model will then be jointly integrated by UoS and UCL with engineering cost models to estimate the capital and operating costs of the process plant and to ultimately provide a cost estimate for methanol production from BOF and biomass synthesis gases. The industrial partner, Swerea MEFOS AB, will provide technical expertise & necessary process data for the SSAB steel plant.as an in-kind contribution for model setup. This includes, process stream mass flow rates and compositions, current energy usage data and utility and feed-stock costs.
