Skull evolution and the terrestrialization and radiation of tetrapods
This ambitious project will combine high-resolution CT scanning, 3D visualization techniques, in vivo experimental data, and biomechanical modelling to characterize the evolution of skull shape, head musculature, and skull mechanics across the landmark water-land transition of vertebrates. We will produce new 3D reconstructions of iconic early tetrapod skulls and gain new insights into this key moment in evolution using finite element analysis, musculoskeletal modelling and evolutionary modelling.
