Hospital Engineering Assessment for Resilience to Tsunami & Storm surge – Sri Lanka (HEARTS-SL)
The Sri Lanka Ministry of Health (MoH) in collaboration with World Health Organization (WHO) is working to strengthen the health sector for emergencies, through the development of a comprehensive national disaster management plan. Current initiatives include the adaptation of WHO 'Safe Hospital' guidelines for Sri Lanka, which has been conducted by University of Moratuwa in collaboration with MoH Disaster Preparedness and Response Division (DPRD). To enrich the “Safe Hospital” project, HEARTS-SL will develop an evidence base on the vulnerability of hospitals in Sri Lanka to tsunami and storm surge, with the aim of opening discussions with the Ministry of Health and other key stakeholders on how to improve the hazard resilience of critical hospital services. This research is conducted as a collaboration between University of Moratuwa (UoM) and University College London (UCL).
