What about the dads?
This is a scoping review to summarise progress on linking dads to their children in administrative health data. The importance of promoting a healthy family environment for children and young people is recognised in English policy, across range of government departments and all-parliamentary groups. There is increasing awareness that fathers are a crucial part of the family environment. However, both the services we offer and the data we have available focus on mothers and their children. In this study, we focus on the contribution of fathers and father-figures to child and young person health and wellbeing, as part of the family environment. We are looking at how we might research inter-related child and father health using administrative data from health services. This is a scoping review, based on a systematic search of the literature and intelligence from stakeholder networks. I am leading this study with Dr Katie Harron from UCL GOSH Institute of Child Health, collaborating with Professor Margaret O'Brien (UCL IOE Thomas Coram Research Unit) and Dr Hardelid (UCL GOSH Institute of Child Health). We are grateful to UCL Grand Challenges for funding this scoping study.
