High resolution X-ray spectroscopy of AGN
Investigations of the gaseous environment of supermassive black holes powering Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). High resolution spectroscopy of these X-ray sources has led to the discovery and characterisation of the 'warm absorbers' surrounding the nuclei of active galaxies. The absorbers are ionised by the X-ray emission from the nucleus and imprint characteristic absorption and emission lines on the X-ray spectral continuum.
