East Sussex Modern: Journeys in a Modern Topography
This was an Arts Council England and Elephant Trust funded project on modernist architecture, town planning and infrastructure within the county of East Sussex. Photolanguage (Nigel Green & Robin Wilson) worked between archival records and physical sites to produce an exhibition responding to the legacy of Borough and Water Engineer Sidney Little, exploring sites from the coastal promenade to the inland reservoirs of Darwell and Powdermill. Through our forays we constructed a fictional dialogue between official sites and found ruins. The work was exhibited at Electro Studios Gallery, St Leonards. Critic Andrew Mead was commissioned to produce the essay 'Unconsidered Ground' for the catalogue Journeys in a Modern Topography. An image from the exhibition was featured in the RIBA Journal (Nov. 2016, p.12) and aspects of the project were explored as an example of arts-based research in the peer reviewed article (Robin Wilson, ‘A Journey Through Modern Foundations: Re Imaging Modernity in the Work of Photolanguage’, Design Ecologies, 7 (1), pp. 22-47, 2018).
