Essay drawings on vellum and digital film
Between the Retina and the Dome, 2018 (animation: John Cruwys; Sound design: Kevin Pollard) and With-drawing Room on Vellum, 2016 (animation: TJ Brook Lin) are essayist drawings that consider the impact of digital technology on architectural representation through the use of medieval drawing materials and techniques combined with digital film and projection. By bringing together vellum (animal skin) and gilding in precious metals – as the forgotten, visceral past – and digital projection – as the uncertain evanescent future of architectural drawing surface – my drawings probe and challenge the current tendency for drawing to withdraw from the skin of the world. Between the Retina and the Dome was created for, funded by, and exhibited at SEE-ING: The Environmental Consciousness Project, Storrs Gallery, University of North Carolina at Charlotte, USA, 15 October – 16 November 2018. Curator: Catty Dan Zhang. Co-exhibitors: Bernadette Devilat, Carl Lostritto, Certain Measures, Chai Mi, Ibañez Kim, Invivia, Sean Lally, The Living, Catty Dan Zhang. It was also shown At Works + Words 2019, Biennale of Artistic Research in Architecture The Great Exhibition Hall, Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, School of Architecture, Copenhagen, Denmark, 28 November 2019 – 19 January 2020. Curators: Anders Abraham, Peter Bertram, Christina Capetillo. With-drawing Room on Vellum was created for the conference, Drawing Futures, and published in the accompanying book: Haralambidou, P. (2016). With-drawing Room on Vellum: The Persistent Vanishing of the Architectural Drawing Surface. In Allen, L., Pearson L. (Eds.). Drawing Futures: Speculations for Contemporary Art and Architecture (pp.82–89). London UCL Press. It was presented at Research Skills Intercollegiate Network, Spring Programme, University of London, SOAS, London and was part of two keynote presentations at the international conferences: 2018, ‘The Essayist Drawing: A Form that Thinks’, Keynote presentation, Disegno 2018 | Mastery and uncertainty: The Drawings of Architecture, UCLouvain Architecture, Tournai, Belgium; 2017, ‘The Veiled Matrix of Architectural Representation’, Keynote presentation, Drawing Millions of Plans, KADK, The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Copenhagen, Denmark. With-drawing Room on Vellum was also exhibited at: Disegno 2018 | Mastery and uncertainty: The Drawings of Architecture, UCLouvain Architecture, Tournai, Belgium and features in: Haralambidou, P. (2020). ‘Unveiling the Matrix of Architectural Drawing’, in Hougaard, A., Muller A., and Soberg M. (Eds.), The Artful Plan. Basel Birkhauser.
